Your Guide to SEO for Your Service-Based Business

We use terms like SEO, Meta Titles, Meta Tags, Alt Tags, and Keyword Research all the time in marketing, business, and sales. However, many service-based business owners may hear these terms but are not aware of the extent to which these tactics can be beneficial to their business being found by new potential customers or clients.

To start, let's get into detail about how SEO plays a big role in increasing attention and possible revenue which you are trying to achieve as a service-based business owner.

Keyword Research

For business owners, keyword research analyzes the words and phrases they type into search engines when they are looking for information. The main goal is to attract traffic to your website, which is why keyword research is very important for businesses.

As a business owner, it is important to know your following and what their intent is. A good tool to use to help with this is Google Keyword Planner (if you use Google Ads) and SEMRush.

What is Search Engine Optimization?

Search Engine Optimization, also referred to as SEO, plays a vital role in increasing the online presence of service-based businesses. The utilization of SEO practices increases the possibility of search traffic to your website.

SEO can help attract potential clients who are highly interested in what your business offers, this can increase the chance of your products and services getting seen. Your business can benefit from SEO by generating more leads, increasing brand awareness both locally and internationally, and staying one step ahead of your competitors at all times.

How SEO Works

SEO is an organic tactic rather than relying on PPC (Pay Per Click) which is where you have to pay search engines like Google for your site to rank first through your advertisements

Getting your service-based business's content and website seen through SEO takes longer than paid ads would. SEO may not be the best solution for your service-based business if you want to get leads fast, as SEO takes time and consistency to work beyond the initial optimization of your website.

Search engines like Google go through a grading process to decide which websites are the most relevant. The different areas of grading include backlinks, content relevance, keyword density, domain age, search intent, technical SEO, and match domain.

The goal is to have visitors spend time on your page and for the bounce rate to be low which would mean that people are intrigued about what you offer. You should create content for SEO that isn't always about your service and offerings but instead helps people learn about your industry and presents your business as a thought leader.

Along with all of this, there are different elements of what makes up SEO. One key aspect is meta titles.

Meta Titles

The meta title is the text that appears in search engine results and browser tabs to summarize a web page's topic. A well-written meta title leads to your page’s ranking in search results.

Using appealing, relevant, and unique words is essential to make your meta title appealing, and easy to understand for the viewer. You can do this by adding information about what you can provide to your clients.

The meta title is strictly for the viewer; it is an opportunity to showcase your business and what you offer. While a well-written meta title can influence click-through rates (CTR) and user experience, it indirectly impacts rankings. Search engines consider CTR and user engagement as part of their algorithms. Therefore, defining your business's uniqueness and being brief is essential.

Meta Tags

In HTML (HyperText Markup Language - defines the structure and meaning of web content), meta tags provide users and search engines with information about the content of a webpage. Meta tags play a critical role in how the website appears in search results, this makes an impact on click-through rate which can increase traffic and engagement.

In addition, meta tags can influence how content is represented in search results and on social media platforms when links are shared.

ALT Tags

ALT tags are a type of metadata that provides descriptions for images on a web page. The ALT tags describe images and help search engines cope with the hard content they contain.

This can be very beneficial for people who are blind or have low vision to understand the visual content on the screen. ALT tags can be added to a photo in many different ways depending on which platform you choose. For Facebook you can select a photo or video, click edit, then ALT Text, then click save. When writing ALT Tags, it is important to use specific words about the image context and subject, keep it simple and easy to read, and use proper punctuation.

The tools listed above can greatly assist your service-based company in attracting new customers and increasing traffic.
